A Modest Victory for New York Voters
I rarely stray from the subject of HR and employment law on this blog, but I am sure that I can find some sort of connection to the subject here somewhere. This past July, New York Governor Paterson hand selected and appointed a Lieutenant Governor for New York. Well, not that I have a clue about this person's credentials, but it really doesn't matter to me how qualified or not he is. What annoys me is the number of "appointed" officials we have. We have an appointed Financial wizard, an appointed Senator, a Governor that no one elected and we were about to have an appointed Lieutenant Governor when an Appellate Court struck down the appointment. How about an election already to let the people vote for the state's leaders? This isn't about political parties or political views, it's about having the opportunity to vet our leaders and participate in the process.
Oh, and the connection to employment law and HR - well, if you 've been following this blog, you may have noticed that our Governor has been on a tear signing laws regulating employment. Yes, some of these are worthwhile and beneficial to New Yorkers, but I think I made my point above.
